Lonergan Goes Under The Knife For Second Time

More surgery for Lonergan

Geelong defender Tom Lonergan remains in hospital in an induced coma as he recovers from kidney surgery after it was revealed on Monday he lost more than half the blood in his body.

So serious was the injury sustained by Lonergan, when he bravely backed into a pack during Saturday's game against Geelong, that doctors were forced to remove one of his kidneys.

Lonergan remains in Geelong Hospital in a serious but stable condition but despite the extent of his injuries, the Cats are optimistic he will make a full recovery and will be able to continue his AFL career.

Geelong's club doctor Chris Bradshaw said the club's main concern was making sure the 22-year-old's condition progressed well in the next few days with Lonergan facing further surgery on Monday night to remove the surgery packs used during the initial operation on Sunday morning.

"After surgery today to take the packs out, after that he should be brought out of that induced coma," Bradshaw said.

Lonergan has been in an induced coma since complications arose early on Sunday morning after it was initially felt he would not need surgery.

"About 3am on Sunday morning his blood pressure was dropping and a quick decision was made to take him to theatre and it was found he had lost about three litres of blood,' Bradshaw said, adding the human body held around five litres of blood.

"So there was a fair bit of bleeding and it necessitated in taking out his kidney and that happened in about a six hour procedure on Sunday morning."

Bradshaw admitted that had the surgeons at Geelong hospital not acted so quickly, Lonergan's condition could have been much worse.

"He was being monitored carefully and the minute his blood pressure started dropping, they acted quickly."

"It could have got dire but it was under control the whole time."

Bradshaw said the human body could function with only one third of one kidney so Lonergan will be capable of resuming his career.

However at this stage the club is not even thinking about his immediate playing future.

"I think he has got a good chance of playing again but I am concerned about getting him through the next few days first and then we can work out his long-term outlook," Bradshaw said.

"He is in a serious but stable condition and we are fairly optimistic about his recovery but we are obviously very cautious at the same time."

While Bradshaw said such serious internal injuries were not common in the AFL, he said players had played with one kidney before.

"I am fairly optimistic about his playing future as long as he gets through the next few days okay."

Bradshaw said during his time as Richmond's club doctor one of the players was able to successfully play with one kidney after it was revealed the player in fact only had one kidney after he was sent for tests when blood was found in his urine.

Just two years ago ex-Collingwood player Bo Nixon played one game for Hawthorn after having lost a kidney through illness with Nixon wearing a guard to protect his remaining kidney.

And one of Geelong's greatest players and now Channel Nine television personality John "Sam" Newman lost part of his kidney at the age of 21 but went on to play for the Cats for another 13 seasons.

Bradshaw also revealed that Lonergan had suffered an earlier injury to the same kidney while playing junior football at 16, which contributed to the seriousness of his latest injury.

"Apparently the scar tissue from that injury made it a bit more dire when he got hit this time," he said.

"The bottom half of the kidney was severely lacerated and severely bruised and he also had an injury to the main vein that comes up to the heart and that is what caused the bleeding."

Geelongblog.com thoughts are with Tommy after this horrific injury and we wish him all the best in recovery.

Put On Your Suit & Tie

*Pops Champagne*

Our season is officially over. No more talk of finals as it is, wait for these two magical words, mathematically impossible.

Ahh, now we can move back to bitching about the club...

As usual I made my way over to Kardinia Park on Saturday. Got there in time to honour Peter Riccardi on his fantastic career for the club. A tear started to well up in my eyes as he went past the terrace. It was great seeing some of the great moments up on the big screen also, despite the fact the club fluffed it for a few minutes where it stopped and then restarted. Whoever is responsible for the clubs mutlimedia on gamedays should be fired as they always stuff things like this up. Every single time. It is just so unprofessional and reflects poorly on the club.

In another nice touch Ricco handed over his #15 guernsey to Ryan Gamble for next season which was a touching moment for the young kid. We'll ignore the fact he should have been playing...

After all this Geelong then proceeded to put in one of the worst halves of football I've ever seen. I commented at half time to someone I'd lost count the amount of times I'd said that this season, which pretty much explains why we don't deserve to make finals. We were down by 31 points and lucky to be only down that much honestly. Melbourne weren't fantastic, they made their fair share of poor mistakes also but were definitely the classier side.

After half time everything changed. The players came out wanting to play football. It was a change in mindset, suddenly they were throwing their bodies at the ball and putting Melbourne under the kind pressure they crack under. Players started to come to life, Gazza for instance burst into the game with the presence he usually brings to the table. The result? A 6 to 2 goal third quarter which put us within touching distance.

The last quarter will be remembered for 4 things. Firstly Tommy Lonergan coming back infront of a Brad Miller lead and getting absolutely crunched for his courageous act. He was aided from the field, but more on that in another entry. Secondly Dog Johnson delivering one of the best shirtfronts on Ben Holland that I had seen for quite a while, this set up Scarlo the full forward for his second of the game and I'm pretty sure gave us a lead. All this good work was undone by Steven King who let Mark Jamar fly uncontested and kick the deciding goal in the end. Jamar Jamar! Oh well, as a kind of sidenote King was hopeless all day and is simply too slow to play AFL football. Lastly was the Scarlett snap at goal which fell 10m short only for Carroll to drop a simple mark under pressure which lead to Jimmy Bartel punching through the winning point about half a second too late. Yes, it ended as a bloody pointless draw.

Season Over For Mooney

Mooney done for '06

Geelong's Cameron Mooney has accepted his fourth suspension of the season, effectively bringing an early end to his tortured 2006 year.

Mooney will miss the last two home and away games of the season and will not play again this season, unless in the unlikely event the Cats make the finals, after accepting a two match ban for striking Sydney's Amon Buchanan.

The words you bloody stupid tool come to mind. That's 5 weeks of suspensions total for the season from 4 offences. Next time just break Aaron Hamill's jaw in Round 1 and get it out of the way in one shot.

Cats get their fight back...way too late

Rooke.jpg
Courtesy: Herald Sun

I'm going to keep this short and simple because our season is basically over and it's all about 2007.

Despite Geelong beating the reigning premiers by 27 points on Sunday you could argue that it was one of the most frustrating games of the season. Not because of how we played, nor because at times there were 30 players around the ball. It was simply another case of what could have been.

Lead by Jarad Rooke the players showed fantastic tenacity, desperation & effort against a team that prides itself on these traits, but the question has to be asked where was this attitude last week against St. Kilda? Where was it only three weeks ago in Canberra against the Kangaroos? It is an all too familiar story with us at Geelong. We somehow find our best after the horse has already bolted.

Matthew Scarlett, after I had criticised him on here just last week came back and played his best game of the season on Barry Hall keeping him to only 2 kicks. It still doesn't change my opinion on his season but it was a glimpse back to the Scarlo of 2004. He was fantastic.

Apart from that it was the usual crew. Mooney played CHF really well, he has really made it his position this year, when he has been on the field that is. While Joel Corey was his usual self in the midfield with help from Paul Chapman & Darren Milburn.

Peter Riccardi: A Tribute

Last Sunday Peter Riccardi once again injured his hamstring and thus has called time on his GFC/AFL career, but let's not remember him for how he went out. Let's think of the trademark Riccardi bursts down the wing, or the classy left foot goals on the run & his early 90's flopping crullet.

Favourite Ricco Memories

On debut doing a one-two with Gazza down the wing in the 2nd quarter, dodging a tackler and composing himself to kick a great goal.

Of course the run down the wing in the dying moments of the 1994 Preliminary Final against North Melbourne.

Kicking a goal against Essendon in 1995 straight after Gazza had done his magic in the pocket only a minute earlier to complete a great comeback win. "Riccardi goes bang and kicks another one!" *cue wobbly arm exhausted Ricco celebration*

A 55-60m torpedo goal against West Coast @ KP (see video link below)

The after the siren goal against Carlton @ the Telstra Dome to avert disaster in 2002.

The dodging & spinning goal against the Western Bulldogs just last year

...and many others. I got a few short Ricco clips on my computer so if anyone is interested send me an email at the link down the right hand side of the page.

Geelongblog.com would thank Ricco for a wonderful career in the hoops and would like to wish Ricco the best for his future endevours.

Thanks Speedster!

Finals Myth Finally Put To Rest

371702.jpg

Well it's finally over and lets be honest it deserves to be. We haven't been upto standard this season and the reasons for this were evident on Sunday against St. Kilda.

Firstly we lack leadership. Where was Steven King when the game was to be won? On the bench. Sure that is partly Thompsons fault that he is on the bench because it's his gameplan & decision, but when King was on the ground he was slow, soft and may have well been invisible. King cannot be captain of the GFC next season. King is not the only one at fault, Scarlett going psycho at Blake when the blame should placed souly at him was another example. Cook said only a few weeks ago we wouldn't be going after Akermanis due to the lack of leadership at the club, well why hasn't this problem been addressed? It has been evident for several seasons now!

Where was the intensity? We've been told week after week that every game is like a final. Then why is it in 2 of the 3 last games have we been totally outplayed and been shown up in the intensity stakes? St. Kilda upped the tempo in midway through the 2nd quarter and we could not match them and of course they duly went on to win the game despite missing Hayes, Hamill & Maguire.

Crucial small mistakes cost us in the backline. Like the occasional poor Hunt kick coming out of defense, or Tom Harley unable to bend over to pick up the ball only to slip over and handball straight to Brett Voss. Then there was Scarlett who couldn't be bothered running back to Gehrig in the pocket after he had turned the ball over up the ground. Instead of running to his man he simply jogged back to him. Geelong fans who think Scarlett should be All-Australian this season are kidding themselves.

Our long bomb to Ottens gameplan is predictable and doesn't work but there doesn't seem to be any changes coming from the coaches box who where willing to allow loose defenders for both sides despite the fact it left Ottens with a 1 on 2/3 most of the time.

Other areas which St. Kilda showed us up include run out of the backline, kicking for goal and players who can kick goals from outside 50m on the run. Basically it was a very sorry day, I knew it would be when I found out I was sitting 2 bays away from the cheersquad and had a bloke yelling "MAN UP" all game behind me. Only for a 6 year old girl to tell him to shut up. Yes, he should shut up because he didn't have much idea what was going on, but the people around me seemed to think he should have been being positive. What is positive about Henry Playfair not attacking the football, hence Sam Fisher spoils his marking attempt, runs off him, receives a handball and then kicks a 55m goal on the run? How the f*ck can you be positive about that?

So it has basically come down to this. Win and the 'goal' that is finals stays alive for another week, lose and we can all start looking forward to next season. Feels like I've been saying that for weeks now, but it seems appropriate that a match of Geelong Vs. St. Kilda stature will go a fair way to settling the argument.

We've got the wood of the Saints at the moment having won 3 of the last 4 games & they're coming off a loss to West Coast in which they lost a vital cog of their side Matt Maguire. Koschitzke comes in and if he lines up we must show no remorse to him, how hard we go at him & the ball will symbolise how much the players want finals football.

Mooney & Gazza come in for the suspended Jimmy Bartel and the lackluster James Kelly who at the moment seems to be losing his battle of being in the hoops next season.

I don't know how this one will turn out, either way wouldn't surprise me at all but for some reason the past week I've found optimism in our season a bit. Which is weird as I can't see us doing anything if we make finals in the first place thus making the finals a somewhat pointless exercise. I just feel this is the Geelong 'thing to do'. You know, mess up a big chance this season only to make a late run of things when it's all too late to try and save our own bacon (read Mark Thompson & his coaching staff). No matter what happens this season should not & cannot be tolerated by the Geelong fans, we should not be happy regardless of whether we sneak into the eight or not.

What does the above have to do with the St. Kilda game? Meh, it had to be said.

Prediction: Geelong by 8 points

Bartel To Miss St. Kilda Clash

Bartel Stands.jpg
Jimmy Bartel where he will be on Sunday, in the stands

Bartel Penalty Cut

Geelong has been successful in downgrading midfielder Jimmy Bartel's rough conduct charge from reckless to negligent, meaning he will miss only one game instead of the two he was originally offered.

The Cats argued that Bartel was negligent in making contact with Brisbane Lion Troy Selwood and that he tried to pull up when approaching the Lions midfielder who was stumbling forward after brushing past an umpire.

Bartel was originally charged with a level three offence for engaging in rough conduct against Selwood during the first quarter of the match at the Gabba last Sunday.

The Cats showed extensive footage of the incident that left Selwood momentarily dazed but without any further concussion and argued that Bartel had his eyes on the ball throughout the entire incident.

Player advocate Peter Murdoch QC argued that Bartel had been intending to block for teammate Joel Corey while Bartel himself said he had turned his back on Selwood once he knew contact was inevitable.

"I saw (Selwood) stumble and the ball bounced away. I turned my body to block for Corey and turned my back on Selwood," Bartel said.

"My intention was to stop (Selwood) getting the ball and I wanted to make contact to his shoulder as he was falling."

Jimmy is going to be a huge loss for us on Sunday. In my opinion he's been our best out & out midfielder this season and we will miss his input and the club STILL push for finals.

Still he deserves the week he gets. As soon as I saw it live I knew he was in trouble and this isn't the first time he's made contact like that. However we are still a chance to beat St. Kilda who are missing a top quality midfielder in Lenny Hayes, but this will make it a lot harder.

Road Win For Cats Comes Week Too Late?

When this game started I'd been awake for 10 minutes and was pretty hungover so I think it's best I handball this off to Simon White

Cats cling to finals hopes

Geelong has revitalised its finals aspirations, overcoming an innacurate display in front of goals to account for the Brisbane Lions by 17 points at the Gabba on Sunday afternoon.

Mark Thompson's side looked in command of the contest for the most part but a poor conversion rate threatened to bring them undone - particularly when the Lions kicked the first three goals of the second half to momentarily hit the front. The Cats, however, hung tough and were able to forge a 14.20 (104) to 13.9 (87) victory, their ninth of the season.

The result puts Geelong back within four points of Fremantle in the battle for eighth spot, with the Dockers hosting Hawthorn later on Sunday.

While the Cats struggled to make full use of their many chance, the efficiency of two of their smaller forwards - Steven Johnson and Peter Riccardi - was telling.

Johnson registered the first major of the day with a miraculous left foot snap from deep in the left forward pocket and added another two in a second term spree during which both sides combined for seven goals in eight minutes.

Veteran Riccardi started on the bench, as is the norm these days, but it didn't take him long to make an impact, with two fine pieces of finishing on his trusty left boot in the second quarter and a soccered third term goal that helped stopped the Lions' revival in its tracks.

Big forward Henry Playfair further swung the momentum back the Cats' way with a major one second before the three-quarter-time siren and Johnson's fourth of the afternoon - set up after a superb tackle laid on Jed Adcock by Paul Chapman - arrived early in the last quarter to all but ensure the four points for Geelong.

If the second half was a slightly dour affair, then the hour that came before it was rather more entertaining. Each side posted four goals in the first stanza, with Geelong's twin towers, Brad Ottens and Steven King, looking dangerous.

At the other end, in-form Lion Daniel Bradshaw was somewhat surprisingly picked up by Matthew Egan, while star Cats defender Matthew Scarlett stood the less well-credentialled Daniel Merrett.

Geelong led by five points at the first change - their tally of behinds to that stage - and extended their advantage to 10 points at the long break, albeit having posted a wasteful 9.11.

A Josh Drummond goal, followed by two quick and clever snaps by Bradshaw saw the Lions assume an unlikely lead by the eight-minute mark of the third quarter. But such a scoreline was unfair on Geelong, something the Cats proved by taking advantage of their flow of play to kick the next five goals of the contest and put the result beyond doubt.

Although the Lions restored respectability to the scoreboard late on with a fourth goal from Bradshaw and a handy snap by Rhan Hooper, it was a case of too little and too late.

For the Cats, Jimmy Bartel was prominent throughout in amassing a game-high 30 possessions, with Chapman a valuable contributor across half-forward, Steven Johnson impressive and David Johnson keeping the electric Hooper to only seven disposals.

Luke Power led the Lions' possession count with 29 touches and Simon Black did some good work around the stoppages en route to his 21 possessions. Drummond was lively in the forward 50m but limped off in the last quarter with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.

The Lions' lengthy injury list may yet have a couple more additions. Apart from Drummond, Adcock left the ground to receive treatment on a back complaint, Michael Rischitelli went off and received work on his shoulder and Bradshaw spent time off the ground with a finger injury.

Geelong coach Thompson was thrilled with the result and said the win help remove some "bad memories" of previous visits to the Gabba and last week's loss in Canberra .

"We have never won at this ground against the Lions so we are thrilled to come up here and take the points," he said after the game.

"It was unacceptable last week how we played being so awful so we wanted to avenge that.

"We have had some bad memories at this ground and I don't blame the players for not winning by a lot - just to win was a good effort here."

Lions coach Leigh Matthews bemoaned his side's lack of run and was quick to point to the physical transformation from when the then triple-premiers of 2003 regularly dominated the up-and-coming Cats.

"The last couple of times we've played Geelong it's actually been a bit of deja vu from three-and-half years with the jumpers swapped. They've now got the bigger stronger bodies and we've got the skinnier ones," Matthews said.

"We didn't have enough contributors who could affect the game but we kept plugging away. We couldn't attack through the centre corridor and had no real run in our game. With uncontested possessions, you've to to run to get them.

"They were able to get the ball and run and straighten themselves up, whereas we were trying to do it the cheating way, if you want to call it that, by going out wide."

Midweek Happenings

The backlash from our pitiful performance in Canberra has started with all & sundry sticking the boot in & fair enough in my opinion. Here's a bit of a round up of what's going on.

Ablett Out

Geelong's worst fears have not been revealed as star playmaker Gary Ablett has been cleared of a serious shoulder injury, but he will still miss up to three weeks of football.

Ablett was crunched by Jess Sinclair in the first quarter of the Kangaroos' win over the Cats on Sunday at Manuka Oval and took no further part in the match - he went to the rooms after the incident before returning to the bench with his arm in a sling.

But scans taken on Monday of the injury have revealed that Ablett - who has not missed a game this season - has suffered 'grade one' damage to his AC joint and will not require surgery.

I'd sit Gazza for the rest of the season. His body is always battling to be fit during the week & this is the perfect chance to give him so rest with finals out of the picture. I know he won't want to call it a day on his season, but there are more important things at hand than winning Geelongblog.com Player of the Year.

Mooney Suspended Again

Geelong has decided to accept a one-match ban handed down to the wayward Cameron Mooney by the AFL match review panel on Monday - his third suspension of 2006.

Mooney was reported for charging the Kangaroos' Daniel Pratt on Sunday in what was his first game back after having just served his second one-match suspension of the season.

Oh Moons, I think you could be a great leader of the GFC but with these indiscretions repeatedly popping up it will never ever happen will it? Good to see the club have finally fined you. If you're going to going to get reported for 3 weeks a season you might as well sit them all at once and actually damage your opponent rather than getting a week each for all these soft acts.

The Duke On The Move?

Kent Kingsley is out of contract and contemplating his footballing future. The four-time leading goalkicker has fallen out of favour at the Cattery after a lean year and, with only five rounds remaining in the AFL season, is yet to even start negotiating a new deal with Geelong.

Unless the Cats bring something to the table soon, he may have to accept a rival club's offer, with at least one Melbourne-based team understood to have floated a three-year deal.

Although Kingsley's manager, Paul Connors, could not confirm the offer yesterday, there is an increasing amount of interest in the 27-year-old.

Could this be the end of the KKK? Call me crazy but I hope not. I expect him to be recalled after his 6 goals in the reserves on the weekend and I think despite all his flaws he is still the 3rd best tall forward we have behind Ottens & Mooney.

Having observed him on the weekend he seems to have altered his kicking style a touch & is kicking through the ball a lot more than previously. Whether this helps his accuracy problem or not is yet to be seen, but with a tall forward clearout expected at the end of the season Kent is a player I'd be keen to hold onto for another 1-2 years unless a dream trade offer came along.

And finally we come to,

Bomber Thompson

No articles for this one as it is all speculation. With the club almost certain to miss the finals this year, in a season which promised so much at the start Bomber's position is under a huge amount of scrutiny.

I've heard many theories recently. Some tend to think Bomber will fall on his sword 'if' we don't make finals. This makes sense to me, Thompson has never said he was in the coaching gig for the long haul and seems like the guy who is willing to admit he has taken the club as far as he can take it & come up short.

Another one is Cook & Costa are sharpening the knives for various reasons. The first reason is pretty obvious, they'll cut the cord 'if' (there's that bloody word again) we don't make the eight. The other one is way too personal to be aired on the blog but it will result in Thompsons sacking nonetheless.

So hypothetically Thompson goes, who comes into replace him? Cresswell seems to be a popular choice but here's a name I will throw up just because I heard it two weeks ago in one of the aforementioned rumors...

Wayne Carey

We're On The Road To Nowhere

I had never been to an interstate Geelong game before and when I was asked on a virtually all expenses paid trip to Canberra to see us take on the Kangaroos it involved some serious deliberation. Serious deliberation?! I can sense you all thinking to yourself. What is there to think about? As I explained to the boys when I was picked up just after 4am "I'm more likely to be going to sleep right now than waking up" and a 16 hour car trip in a 20 hour period isn't to be taken lightly, but what the hell...

By the boys I mean of course fellow Geelongblog.com contributor The Kolonel, our trip organiser Dazza/El Presidente/Elvis/Baghdatis & Hector the Bear. Hector belongs to a primary school class & it was one of El Presidentes daughters turn to take him home for the weekend so it was decided it was about time he was educated about hardcore pornography & fireworks.

I was the last of the lads to be picked up so once I had sleepily dragged myself into Dazza's Territory it was off to the ACT. We headed down straight into the heart of Geelong's nightlife. It was funny to see it through sober eyes for once. KFC was absolutely packed as usual. No doubt someone was lurking to steal somebody elses Twister when they weren't looking, while we were all on the lookout for Dazza's younger party boy brother, but all we managed to see where various people lying in the streets looking rather sorry for themselves.

The trip up the Princess & Hume highways went rather fast with talk of football & how our beloved local cricket club had faired over the off-season. I was rather cautious about our upcoming fixture we were travelling to. The whole interstate vibe was there, plus the Kangaroos saying goodbye to Canberra. I felt they had something to play for rather than just pride, but still if we were good enough for finals we just simply had to win games like this one.

Our first stop was breakfast in a half construction site McDonalds in Albury. I felt rather stupid walking into a McDonalds at 8am with a Geelong gurnsey on, but it caught the attention of a couple of local pissheads behind us in the queue who provided a few laughs & smells as Dazza found out first hand. One of them was wearing a NSW rugby top, it seemed we had well & truely entered "Rugby Country".

Next stop was Holbrook or H-town as it is known due to it being the 'Home of H'. A feat that apparently isn't worth bragging about due to the lack of any announcement to visitors to this one house town. While Dazza took a photo of Hector on one of the many submarine related signs The Kolonel & I had a morning kick to prevent some DVT. I wanted to track down the home of Big Henrys parents so I could ask them when the dopey bugger would kick 4 goals in AFL match and win me a slab but time was of the essence plus I think I know the answer to that question anyways...

As mentioned in the Kolonels report the previous days VFL was the hot topic. We all seemed to have McCarthy name on the chopping block, with me pushing Blake as a replacement allowing to play Ottens at FF all day. The Kolonel did as only The Kolonel can by plugging Kent non-stop after his 6 goals the day earlier and we pretty much all agreed Prismall shouldn't be missing out at the expense of Kelly.

We had another brief stop at Gundagai as another Hector photo opportunity couldn't be turned down. The sun beamed down on us plesantly while we were there, all this hype about the 'Canberra Chill' would surely not live upto the hype today would it?

As we got closer to Canberra I slipped on my i-Pod for a chance to listen to my Aston Villa podcast. Why not get away from the depressing state of one of my sporting clubs, but listening to the weekly events of another of my depressing football teams?

After 8 hour we finally spotted our destination. Having been to Canberra once before it was good to see again some of the sights briefly as we drove past them in the nations capital. We jokingly saw Johnny Howard running up the hill towards Parliament House but he didn't have his Wallabies jacket on so it musn't have been him. I wanted to grab a screwdriver & get a photo of Hector hugging the PM with it lodged in one of his paws but it wasn't to be.

Instead we nearly got in trouble with the ACTs police force as we were stopped in a suburban street receiving our tickets & parking pass off Dazzas sister. With the law enforcer being kind to us & overlooking our indiscretion we found the Manuka car park after trying to unsuccessfully trying to pass ourselves off as worthy of the disabled car park.

After meeting up with a couple of Dazza's local Kangaroo supporting friends we headed off to find out seats. I took an instant liking to the ground. Very suburban & pretty close to the action. I loved the fact that the outer had a hill where it was first in best dressed, but we had reserved seats on the 50m flank, opposite side of the ground which was lucky because it sheltered us from the very cool breeze. Yes, the 'Canberra Chill' was living upto its name.

Here's a selection of photos of Manuka Oval:

The crowd was pretty much split up 40/40/20%. There was a sizeable & loud Geelong contingent, a lot more than I thought but it was like an exhibition game in a sense as there are so many neutrals around. I guess if I only got 3 local games of AFL football a season I'd go and watch them too no matter who was playing.

During the warm up we noticed Rooke was out and as predicted in came 'Speedster' Peter Riccardi. Brent Prismall & Charlie Gardiner were sitting two rows in front of us for the game. Made me wonder what would have happened if 3 players went down with gastro the morning of the match. Prismall & Gardiner did as we expected, sat there all game emotionless, rarely speaking to the few fans they knew and barely speaking to each other from the few times I looked.

IMG_0375.JPG

I'll say as little about the match as possible as we were pathetic. The Kangaroos had kicked 4 goals with the minimum of effort before the players looked like they realised they were in a game. To top things off Ablett & Ling went off early in the first quarter with injuries that didn't see them get back on the ground for the rest of the day.

We looked to be mounting a comeback in the second quarter before Stokes & Ottens respectively missed easy chances 15m, to which the Roos replied with two goals themselves to send the margin back out to comfortable proportions.

At half time The Kolonel & I went for a walk around the ground. I found out the Manuka have the smallest toilets for a sporting ground I have ever seen. Even our local cricket club toilets are bigger. That was the only problem with the ground, that & the fact that there were Foxtel people everywhere for no apparent reason. If you're going to sign up for Foxtel, are you going to do it at an AFL game?

During the main break The Kolonel & I found we could see into the Geelong rooms through these big glass panels at the back of the main grandstand. I felt like banging on the glass and pointing the the club logo on my guernsey and yelling "where is the passion?" but didn't have the guts. We took some photos of them 'warming down' but due to the sun reflecting off the glass they didn't come out too well. Here's one for an example:

IMG_0377.jpg

Then we headed around to the cheersquad to take a photo of the infamous chant guy:

IMG_0380.jpg

He'd be the one with the hairy shoulders that take Sav Rocca's to task and the guernsey covered in signatures. The next bit I will just blatantly steal from The Kolonel:

When we returned from our papparazing, Elvis informed us we had spent the entire first half sitting next to Brad Ottens mum. It was just a good thing I hadn’t been drinking!! Mind you, Mrs Ottens had been doing more than enough for all of us, saying the only way she could get through a game was to get drunk! Every time Brad kicked a goal, she would reach for her hipflask and top up her bottle of coke. Lucky for her Brad had an off day with his kicking.

Although Brad had a much improved 2nd half to be one of our few contributors on the day. Dazza (or Elvis) joked with her about allowing her into the rooms to speak to Brad, which she took too seriously or was too drunk to notice the smirk on his face as she replied

"They don't let the mothers in the rooms!"
You don't say Mrs. Ottens...

We continued to let the Kangaroos run all over us using their pace and excellent delivery by foot to hurt us, while our plan revolved around bombing it to Ottens (who often had 3 to beat), Mooney (who went missing after he was reported in the first quarter) & McCarthy (who couldn't take a mark to save himself in the forward line) and when the ball was brought to ground we had no-one there and the Roos ran it out with ease. Late into the last quarter we spotted a Geelong banner in the crowd, it simply said "Thanks for the porn". Says it all really, meanwhile the Manuka screen was running "The Kangaroos would like to thank..." screens all day & I'm surprised the GFC didn't make that list considering our performance.

The final siren finally went to put us out of our misery. Season 2006 is over for us and by my accounts was over along time ago. Mark Thompson would still have you believe otherwise, but I suppose that's in his best interests isn't it? The siren sounding allowed us to have a kick on sacred Manuka turf with its outrageously hard centre square. Too bad the crowd stormed the ground before the Kangaroos had a chance to thank them all and get off the ground safely.

The Kolonel was having pot shots at goal while I was trying to outmark the drunks in goal who where flying for everything only to boot the ball away in the wrong direction when they got their hands on it. The Kolonel did manage to hit a kid in the head which was quite a nice effort. Another thing that pissed me off was when you'd call for someone to return your footy and they'd pass it back to you 'rugby style'. It was then reality hit you and you realised you were back in dodgy Canberra. Oh another thing was the security guards who forced us off the oval after 25 minutes, oh that's right you have to keep the ground in good condition for your next AFL game in 2025...

And just like that, it was over & we were back on the road again forced into listening to the Melbourne Storm before we finally found the footy. Unlike the trip up, the trip back was a long & sorry one with all of us depressed & unimpressed with the afternoons events. I floated the idea of Blake, Prismall, Batchelor, Varcoe & Co. getting runs before the year was out as we now had nothing to play for.

I spent the trip back trying to sleep with my i-Pod blaring but I was too uncomfortable, plus we wanted to keep Dazza company for the huge efforts behind the wheel he was putting in despite us offering for him to have some respite.

We stopped in Albury again where I was served in a KFC by a 12yr old, 30kg male by the name of 'Maurice'. For some reasons the KFCs up there have TVs with Foxtel on them. The only other stop on the way back was to have a kick of the footy in a service station near Seymore to keep Dazzas mind active for the final stretch until we finally hit G-Town just after midnight.

As I sat in the backseat reflecting on the past day I realised this could be a defining moment for the GFC for years to come. Unlike previous off seasons, this one for the club should be active & dramatic.

Huge thanks go out to Dazza for the mammoth effort he put in behind the wheel and for giving the opportunity to The Kolonel & I to 'break our interstate cherries'. It involved a lot of disappointment, pain, sleepless kilometres & litres of coke but given the chance I'd do it all again in an instant.

Thanks For The Porn

I cringed as I set my alarm for 3:30am. Why would you want to wake up that early on a Sunday morning? As I drove back from Canberra that very night I knew why I didn’t, but 5 weeks without seeing a game of football can do strange things to you.

A spur of the moment phone call from my mate Elvis early in the week and a spontaneous answer had me lined up for a road trip to Canberra to watch Geelong keep their finals dream alive against the ‘Roos at Manuka on Sunday.

A pissweak excuse got me off work on Sunday and it was settled, Elvis, The Kolonel, Sammy D and Hector the bad news bear were to venture 8 hours to the nations capital to answer the question on the lips of many; could the Cats keep their 2006 dream alive?

It turned out I didn’t need my alarm. The body clock was working beautifully and I awoke at 3:28am, threw on some clothes, KKK Shirt included, and ventured into the dark to wait the arrival of Elvis.

Elvis rocked up about 3:50 in, quite appropriately, a black ford territory. Hopefully we weren’t to have the same problems as Gary Ablett Jnr did with his just a few weeks prior.

We then rolled over to the pad of one Sammy D in south Geelong, who staggered out and begrudgingly plonked himself in the backseat of the car. Maybe it was the time, maybe it was the fear of the Kolonel listening to Oasis for the majority of the 16 hour trip, I don’t know. Or maybe he was smarter than he looks and had an inkling about what lie ahead in Canberra.

On our way out of Geelong we drove past KFC in town, which at 4am in the morning is a hub of activity and vomit. It seemed tonight was no exception with the queue reaching out the door. It did cross our mind to pick up a few drunkens to spice the trip up and share the petrol costs, but we decided it was much safer if we kept the trip to the original quartet.

Predictably, the roads were very quiet which allowed us to veer and swerve as we pleased, reaching speeds in excess of 200km/h (only joking mum!). 3 of us were very excited about what lay ahead, who would Riccardi play for? Is McCarthy up to it? And possibly the question that loomed large most of they journey, would the Chant guy be there?

Having faith in the chant guy like I did, I knew he would be there, quite possibly already chanting behind a set of goals despite it being about 5:30am. He guy is a nut case. He would need every strand of shoulder hair to keep him warm this week, as the predicted forecast was about 13.

With a trunk full of fruit we crossed the border made our first stop in Albury at about 7:30am. We chatted with a few drunk guys at the Macca’s who said they were Geelong supporters. Mind you I think they would’ve barracked for whoever we were heading to Canberra to see. It was a bit scary to see them drive off as they didn’t have all their devices about them.

By now the sun was rising and the day was looking magnificent. Our next stop was to be at Holbrook, the home of Henry Playfair. Despite there not being a water tower with his name on it as we entered, there were certainly a lot of submarines, and being the one for famous landmarks, Hector got a nice snap with one, which gave me and Sammy D some time to have a quick kick of the footy.

Despite it being 8:30am, Holbrook resembled a Ghost Town. Apart from some old bum who shouted out ‘Go Kangas’ as he drove past, we didn’t see a single soul. I also raised the question why this town was so infatuated with Subs given it was at least a 4 hour drive to the nearest Ocean.

Given yesterday’s VFL performance, I was keen to talk up the prospect of our great leader Mr Kent Kinglsey returning to the fray next week, should McCarthy have a poor game that afternoon. None of us spoke to fondly of Macca and his stocks only continued to fall as the day went on.

VFL chat did take up a lot of the trip, with many ideas of what to do over the next few weeks to continue our finals surge. Sammy D liked the idea of Blake in the side rather than McCarthy, Elvis wanted Prismall in the line-up, like many other Geelong fans and Hector didn’t say a helluva lot.

He did however have a lovely snap of himself at ‘Dog on Tuckerbox’ a famous landmark that I have never heard of. They had the darkest toilets there, in which I literally could not see shit.

After stopping at Gundagai to pay respect to Dog on Tuckerbox, we headed through the arrogantly named ‘Coolac’, a cooler version of Colac. Their tennis courts resembled and overgrown vegetable patch so it was assumed by Elvis that ‘The Scud’ must’ve been their last tennis export and they had resultantly given up trying. A good idea.

We had now been driving for about 6 hours and anticipation was hitting fever pitch as we swapped asphalt roads for concrete, a sure sign we were in foreign, less intelligent territory.

One thing that was evident was the amount of dead Kangaroos on the side of the road as we moved closer to Canberra. No doubt the Chant Guy had been here only hours before with his rifle, doing his best to disturb the locals. He is obviously a good shot.

Elvis got a call from friends he was meeting, one who was named Howard. We all got excited as we hoped we might be sitting next to Johnny. But as the afternoon panned out, we were treated too much better entertainment than that.

After holding up traffic for a little while to get our tickets of Elvis’s sister, we headed to the car park, and wandered into Manuka Oval. Having not seen the ground before, we were suitably impressed with the facilities, although with only 40 minutes before the bounce, we were surprised at the small crowd that was in the ground.

We took out seats on the 50 towards the right of screen (for those of you playing at home). The Chant Guy, as predicted was there and already painting Canberra navy blue and white in his typical charismatic way. For Sammy d and I, this was our virgin interstate voyage, whilst Elvis had been three times, all without seeing a Geelong win.

The stage was set for the Cats to keep their finals dream alive and give us all reason for taking the effort to head to Canberra.

Mind you, 10 minutes into the game as we all felt sick with regret. The Cats were as horrible as the Coolac tennis courts and played as if they’d rather be back at Dog on tuckerbox. I will not go into many details, as Sammy D shall give a match report, and I can’t really be assed. The game took the shine off a rather enjoyable trip. At half time Sammy D and I ventured outside for a kick only to realise the Players change rooms were glass, and we could see them doing their warm downs, a great chance for some photos. We then decided what would a trip to Canberra be without a few snaps of the Chant guy? I know these will interest the ladies more than anyone, but Gents, have a gawk at those shoulders! That’s how to turn the ladies on.

The second half continued much like the first, with too many chances being wasted to mount a serious charge at the Roos.

In the last quarter, a few Geelong supporters near the Chant Guy held up a sign that said ‘Thanks for the Porn’. If you are reading this blog, thankyou for making my day! That is the funniest sign I have seen at the footy.

The final siren was greeted warmly, as we got to head onto the oval and have a kick of the footy. Being a renowned set shot for goal, it didn’t take the Kolonel long to get the Johnny Barker swing happening against the breeze and begin dobbing them from all angles. My tally was 5 goals 2, with 4 kids injured and one drunk guy not even realising I had clobbered him in the side of the face.

On the way back to the car, we saw Mrs Ottens and her friend heading back to the car, and Mrs Ottens jump in the driver’s seat! We mused that this wasn’t a very good idea, but a quick stop off at the porno shop, and fireworks shop took our mind off this and we were back on the road to Geelong.

After being extra careful to keep away from the swerving hire car of Mrs Ottens, we said goodbye to concrete roads, 110 speed limits and John Howard to head back to the Garden State.

More road kill on the way back suggested the Chant Guy was well ahead of us, and eventually we rolled into Geelong after midnight, much to the delight of my assbone, which is suffering from a grade 2 bruise.

Overall, our worst fears were answered; we wasted 21 hours of a day off to witness one of the more capitulary efforts of the Geelong Football Club this season. But like I said to the lads, it wouldn’t have been a road trip for Geelong fans, had they not played like that.

Next time, I’m flying.
