On Sunday Geelong answered the questions of many scribes and football fans around the country. Coming into the game with a .500 record with all three victories being comfortable wins against the bottom sides in the competition suspicion hovered above the heads of the footy club. Could Geelong match it with the best? Were Geelong nothing but a bunch of flack track bullies?
Geelong obviously sensed the occasion. At times there was a tense hush that fell over the Kardinia Park crowd while Geelong started nervously messing around with the ball and West Coast made us pay twice early. Once Geelong got used to the pace of the game they started to make inroads into the Eagles lead. Disposal by both teams was very poor at times making for some unattractive football but the pressure and toughness at the ball by both sides more than made up for that and by quarter time Geelong had sneaked ahead with a 2 point lead.
Geelong slowly started to take over the game in the second half but bad decision making going into the forward line did not allow their dominance to show on the scoreboard. Ottens & Blake were easily accounting for Seaby & Lynch in the ruck making it easier for Jimmy Bartel & Joel Corey to dominate the clearances. Having had the better of the half, half was spent worrying if we had wasted our opportunity.
Going into the 2nd half I told a few mates I felt the game would be broken open by one side & I just hoped it was us. Luckily it was us. We went up another level. We started to look better moving the ball around the ground and made it show on the scorebaord. Gary Ablett was able to break a solid tag by Adam Selwood cutting loose to two goals while the Eagles were held goaless in the 'premiership quarter' thanks to some questionable football by Steven Armstrong.
When Varcoe slotted our first of the last quarter it looked like the game was all but over, but inspired by Chris Judd the Eagles managed to fight back and kick 4 goals in a row sending the Geelong into a panic attack remembering the massive second half comeback that was led by Daniel Kerr last season. However, this year Kerr was in Ling's pocket with the classy footballer left possessionless in the 2nd half thanks to 'Big Red'. Some late goals by Nathan Ablett & Cameron Mooney meant Geelong run out with a 39 point victory over last years premiers.
Geelong showed on its day it is good enough to beat anyone in the competition, the question is can we produce these performances week in, week out? Looking ahead to the next 5 weeks, we will find out soon enough.
