King sized backflip
Common sense has prevailed at Geelong this weekend, with the out of sorts former skipper Steven King being relegated to the VFL to find some form.
However, one gets the feeling that this “tough” decision may not have been unanimous among the selection committee.
On Monday of this week, coach Mark Thompson was reasonably upbeat about King's position.
"He had 21 hitouts today and played much better than last week"
"He has always taken a while to get into it and I'm sure he will play better next week. He had 21 hitouts in only half a game and he's pulled up pretty well."
But just three days later, signs started to emerge that King's place in the team was to come under heavier scrutiny.
"Like everybody I am not completely happy with (King's form) and he is certainly not either."
"What he needs to do is overcome all the mental side of being re-injured and what happens and what people say."
What caused this about turn by Thompson?
Perhaps others on the selection committee rightly pointed out to Bomber that King was weighing the team down. A Neil Balme, for example, may have suggested to Bomber to forget about Steven King circa 2002 and to focus on what he brings to the team at the moment.
In any case, the correct decision has been made. Geelong's number one ruckman – Brad Ottens – returns to the side to assist the capable but up-and-coming Mark Blake.
For Steven King, the message is simple – find form in the VFL or there is likely to be a serious assessment post-season about his value at this club.
