On Sunday the Kangaroos amid rumors of moves the Gold Coast and the future of their club in doubt came to Kardinia Park and ruined the welcome home party that was the home sides first game in Geelong for the season.
It was won in the middle of the park where the Roos midfielders who were much more hungry and determined than their Geelong counterparts, blew the game open with a 12 goal first half leaving the home supporters stunned and angry to say the least.
The signals were there early as Brent Harvey kicked the first goal of the game with barely 30 seconds on the clock. McIntosh & Simpson killed Geelong at the clearances all day as too many in our midfield stood out of the tough stuff and were only looking to run one way. While our defenders fumbled, dropped easy marks & their disposals missed the target too often. Milburn started up forward in a bad decision which left our forward line top heavy with the likes of Mooney, Hawkins & N. Ablett already in its parameters.
But, it looked like Geelong had put its slow start behind them as it drew level late in the first quarter, but two late Kangaroo goals got them the lead they deserved at quarter time.
If the first quarter was a warning signal Geelong did not adhere to it as the Kangaroos ran riot once again kicking 6 goals for the quarter while we squandered whatever chances we made in front of goal.
After the Roos kicked the first couple of goals of the 2nd half it seemed like the penny had finally dropped. The side lifted kicking a couple of goals to bring the margin with 30 points and the side had all the momentum when Mooney took a mark 30m out on a slight angle. However Mooney handballed to Hawkins who was all by himself but wasn't even facing the play, by the time he gathered the loose handball was under pressure himself and fired off another poor handball to Stokes who was caught holding the ball all while we had an open player in the goalsquare. It should never have come to that as Mooney should have gone back and slotted the goal, however he was far from our worst.
With all that taking place we lost all our momentum and the Roos locked down the rest of the quarter playing keepings off and slowing chipping the ball around the ground.
Another early goal in the last quarter had the game all but over, but Geelong fought on despite still struggling with it's disposal all over the field they somehow dragged themselves into the position of being within a kick with a bit over a minute left if Mooney didn't miss a reasonably easy set shot at the end. But the result was flattering and our run was left far, far too late. You just cannot simply give sides huge headstarts in games of AFL football before your players wake up and switch on to the fact the game isn't going to be the cakewalk they expected it to be. The fact they players didn't respect their opposition is a major worry considering we shouldn't have the respect of any of AFL clubs at this present time.
The positives were Joel Selwood who showed most of the midfield the way in only his 4th game. Travis Varcoe did his job, while Bartel & Chappy battled hard. Ling kicked a few late goals up forward after having the impossible task of tagging the much quicker & agile Daniel Wells. To be honest he shouldn't have gotten in the votes but the rest of the side were that poor. Mackie did alright on a player way too big for him in Drew Petrie, while Mooney tried all day despite dropping a few marks he should take but mostly the delivery to him was poor.
Well I don't know how seriously you can take a "must win" game in Round 6 of the season, but this is just about as serious as will ever get. Playing a Richmond side who have yet to manage a win, but haven't been beaten easily this season proves as a massive danger. If our players show the same amount of disrespect to the opposition this week, all hell will break loose.
