Cats thrash Saints By Jennifer Witham for gfc.com.auA Scintillating second half has given Geelong its fifth consecutive victory, with the Cats comprehensively defeating St Kilda by 60 points at Telstra Dome on Sunday evening.
The Cats kicked nine goals to two after the main break, and with Ross Lyon's men unable to bridge the 36-point gap set at the final change, the Cats took the win 19.11 (125) to 9.11 (65) – leaving them in second place on the ladder.
The Cats haven't won five matches in a row since 2005 – the year they last played finals – when they went on a six-match winning streak starting in round four.
Midfielder Jimmy Bartel showed why he is one of the favourites for the Brownlow with another commanding display, while Cameron Ling got the best of Nick Dal Santo and Steve Johnson took another step toward proving his troubled past is behind him.
Matthew Egan braced himself for another big challenge and took on spearhead Nick Riewoldt and with the exception of a patch in the second term, had the best of the big goalkicker. Joel Corey was also good with 28 disposals and Paul Chapman serviceable in his first game since round six.
In the first term, the Cats' physical pressure outweighed that of the Saints and they consequently took a 19-point lead into the second stanza.Mark Thompson opted to start Mark Blake on the bench, Brad Ottens in the ruck, and Nathan Ablett, Cameron Mooney and Steve Johnson across the forward line.
The Cats were hard early on, which was emphasised in three separate incidents involving Steve Johnson, David Wojcinski and Nathan Ablett all backing into packs Tom Lonergan-style and putting their bodies on the line.
With Matthew Scarlett minding the temperamental Fraser Gehrig and Egan opposed to Riewoldt, the Cats got on top in the first. With Ling slotting two, Wojcinski bursting through the middle to boot one and Rooke, Ottens, Steve Johnson and Joel Corey snaring individual majors.
The Saints started to match the Cats' intensity in the second and the influence of their power forwards started to tell as Riewoldt and Gehrig worked their way into the game.
The Cats dropped off slightly throughout the term and the Saints were within a goal minutes before half time but late majors to Ottens and Mooney made the margin at 17 points at the long break.
Ling's effectiveness overshadowed Dal Santo's as the red head had nine disposals to the Saint's four by half time, while Rooke and Hayes nullified each other with eight touches apiece.The Cats came out breathing fire after the break and used the third term to set up the victory, kicking five goals to two – Steve Johnson and Bartel were the primary influences.
The presence of the talented duo was specifically felt when, at the 10-minute mark, Bartel accepted a handpass from Mathew Stokes and chipped a short snap to Johnson. The small forward duly sent it between the big sticks.Mooney put in an application for mark of the year when he used James Gwilt as a stepladder late in the term, and to top off the soaring grab, he played on and kicked truly to give the Cats a 29-point lead.
A Nathan Ablett snap followed by a poster from Steve Johnson moved the margin out to 36 points for the final change.With the finish line in their sights, the Cats were relentless in keeping the Saints out of the contest and booted four goals to none in the final term.
Geelong now travels to South Australia for the second time in three weeks to meet Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday, while St Kilda faces the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome.
