Geelong has maintained its two game plus percentage lead over the rest of the competition with a 68 point win on the road against the underachieving Fremantle. Geelong survived a small scare in the third quarter as the Dockers got to within 20 points before kicking away and all but ending the West Australian sides season.
Many had identified this as a game Geelong could drop after Fremantle's impressive win over Adelaide under the guidance of new coach Mark Harvey, but Geelong put pay to the doubters with a 6 goal to 1 first quarter thanks to Cameron Mooney who was a handful up forward early.
Geelong's midfield dominance continued in the second & third quarters lead by Gary Ablett who was against simply brilliant in a best on ground display, but Geelong were unable to truly make their dominance count of the scoreboard. Fremantle upped their midfield pressure lowering Geelong's time to deliver the ball into the forward line & had Luke McPharlin back there mopping up everything that came his way.
The 6 goals 14 behinds return for those two quarters are misleading in that Freo conceded a lot of rushed behinds due some excellent forward line pressure from Dog Johnson, Mathew Stokes & James Kelly in particular.
Fremantle would not lie down however and were potent the few times they went forward with Tarrant providing up the ground & Matthew Pavlich giving Egan a headache. Ironically it was actually poor kicking by Tarrant that let Geelong off the hook, he was terrible in front of goal all day and a miss in the third quarter swung the momentum back in Geelongs favour when it looked like a run was imminent.
It was then an unsung hero put his hand up. Little Mathew Stokes kicked 4 goals in the space of about 30 minutes and blew the dispirited Dockers away. Geelong even managed to sneak Josh Hunt & Tom Harley down into the forward line for late goals as Freo's resistance quickly vanished.
There was no doubt in who the best three players on the ground were in the opinion of Geelongblog.com with all three of us giving Gazza, Stokesy & Steve Johnson the 5-4-3 respectively. Ablett was everywhere with 31 touches, several inside 50s & clearances and capped it off with a trademark goal on the run in the last. Stokes had a career day with 5 goals while Steve Johnson was magical at times, accumulated the ball and finished with a couple of trade mark snaps.
Cameron Ling added another impressive scalp to his belt in the form of Peter Bell who was quiet all day, James Kelly kicked 2 goals (missed a sitter) & got over 20 possessions in his 100th game while Tom Harley kept Jeffrey Farmer to only 1 goal and minimal touches.
Stiff to miss out on votes were Joel Corey, Jimmy Bartel, Dasher Milburn, Brad Ottens, Corey Enright, Andrew Mackie, Cameron Mooney...the list could go on & on.
A win against Richmond next week & top spot could be all but officially ours.
