Geelong has unceremoniously thumped the Western Bulldogs by 75 points at Telstra Dome on Friday night.
The Cats’ eleventh consecutive victory is the club’s best winning run since 1952, as it edges ever closer to breaking their 44-year premiership drought.
Four first-half goals to Geelong’s barometer Cameron Mooney and 73 possessions between Brownlow Medal fancies Gary Ablett Jnr and Jimmy Bartel highlighted a fine performance by the premiership favourites.
The Cats were on song from the very start, slamming on 4.1 before the Bulldogs could answer through skipper Brad Johnson, kicking two of his three goals in succession. Mooney’s three goals in six minutes sparked a fine first quarter from Geelong, which saw them kick eight goals to three.
While a long goal from Bulldogs defender Ryan Hargrave had earlier cut the deficit to 13 points, the Cats then went on a goal scoring spree, registering the next eight before Hargrave could answer once more 28 minutes into the second quarter.
However, by then the margin had ballooned out to 56 points, and the game was well and truly over. The difference between the two sides’ work rate and confidence was significant, as the usually skilful Bulldog defence continued to turn the ball over at crucial times.
Scott West appeared to still be carrying a groin injury upon returning to the senior side, and despite collecting 29 touches, his influence on the match was limited. Teammate Matthew Boyd was among the Bulldogs’ best with 27 hard-earnt possessions through midfield.
The third quarter was a mostly dour affair, with each side only managing two goals apiece. A major positive on a horror night for the Dogs was the performance of third-gamer Andrejs Everitt. After limited game time in the first half, Everitt drilled two exciting goals.
The last term began much like the third, both sides not applying as much intensity due to the inevitability of the result. This dull period was brought to a sudden end when the Cats blasted home five goals in the last 11 minutes of the match.
Players who joined in on the scoring feast at the end included the ultra-consistent Paul Chapman with 26 possessions and two majors, while impressive youngster Joel Selwood showed his class once again and finished with 23 disposals, two goals and six tackles.
The much-improved Andrew Mackie was impressive off half-back with 29 possessions, while the underrated Corey Enright used the ball 27 times to follow up his strong performance against Collingwood last weekend.
There were injury concerns for both clubs, with Bulldog Lindsay Gilbee and Geelong speedster David Wojcinski taking no part in the second half. Mitch Hahn also left the ground in the last quarter for the Bulldogs with what appeared to be an injured AC joint.
The Western Bulldogs must regroup for their vital clash with West Coast at the Dome next Friday night in what looms as a season defining match.
