The Unsatisfied Champion
As I mentioned in my first blog of the year , I’m not adverse to a memorable quote from a movie. It appears I’m not alone , Leigh Mathews this week ran with a little beauty about big black holes and Michael Voss. He was referring to a quote from the movie Tombstone, a western about Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. Actually the quote is from a scene in the movie where the two discuss the ruthless killer Johnny Ringo and it goes as follows :
Wyatt Earp : “What makes a man like Ringo , Doc .What makes him do the things he does”
Doc Holiday: “A man like Ringo has a great big hole , right in the middle of himself. And he can never kill enough , or steal enough, or inflict enough pain to ever fill it”
Wyatt Earp : “What does he want?”
Doc Holiday: “Revenge”
Wyatt Earp: “For what?”
Doc Holiday: Bein’ Born
Mathews was making reference to Michael Voss and he inability to be satisfied. Why would he want to coach? He might have had success , in fact he had more than his fair share but he’s not sated. He hungers for more . He has this proverbial ‘Hole’ that just cant be filled and it motivates him to want more. He’s not alone in this. Have look at the elite in any sport , guys like Tiger Woods , Michael Jordan , Roger Federer who have won and won and yet they are not content to sit back and put their feet up. Its not just a matter of skill , it’s a drive to strive and it’s the characteristic that separates short time winners and long time champions. Its what separates champions and chumpions
This characteristic made me think of us and our current position. On top of the ladder , clear by two games , some say were a dead cert to make the GF. How easy would it be take the foot of the pedal , how easy would it be to just lose focus , just a tad. How easy would it be to just be less than 100% desperate to win every single contested ball. How easy would it be to drop of the chase. This what a Chumpion would do , he basks in this temporary success , he quickly grabs what he can , while he can. Meanwhile a champion would be recognizing that winning is a mirage. It can hide errors, it can camouflage things that still need work. A champion can be the best and yet he will still strive for further improvement. Why?He has a "Hole" that can’t be filled. A champion is never satisfied with his current success , he is always thinking on tomorrows contest and making sure he wins that contest.
Yes we are on top. Yes were giving other dismal sides a kicking but really do we want to gauge ourselves against the likes of Fremantle? Giving a flogging to the a bunch of lightweight Doggies is lots of fun but it deliverers little of the respect that the true champion craves. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. ‘We have yet achieved NOTHING”
And what gladdens may heart is I have this feeling that right now, at this point in time, this side of ours knows it. Watching Bathurst each year they say the whole race is about buying a ticket to the last hour or so. And so it is with our game. Sure we have have had a few Sardines for entrée but before this year is out , there will be bigger fish to fry. Sure we have played well enough to change the perception of our team but we are on the cusp of a rare opportunity , the chance to alter the reality of our club. We have achieved nothing but we have worked and strived and diligently positioned ourselves so we have the chance to achieve SOMETHING.
The entrée is nearly over and its nearly time for the main course, and I say bring it on because I’m famished.
