Geelong Trade News Day 2
In more Grand Final fallout, dual premiership speedster David Wojcinski looms as the likely casualty of Geelong’s salary cap squeeze.
And Geelong also looks set to lose promising ruckman Shane Mumford, who has been the subject of a massive offer from Sydney.
With new multi-million dollar contracts for superstars Gary Ablett and Joel Selwood to be negotiated, the Cats don’t have enough cash to accommodate Wojcinski.
The 29-year-old’s future away from Skilled Stadium was sealed after the Cats re-signed Mathew Stokes, who had attracted interest from West Coast.
Mumford has been made an extraordinary offer of about $900,000 for three years – a figure the Cats can get nowhere near – by the Swans.
They yesterday acquired Mark Seaby from West Coast and are desperate to add Mumford as his back-up, given Jolly’s desire to return home to Melbourne.
Mark Blake, who took Mumford’s spot in this year’s premiership, is also out of contract but is expected to re-sign shortly.
Geelong football manager Neil Balme said yesterday the club had extreme difficulties keeping all its premiership players under the salary cap.
“We are in a position where we have to manage keeping our players, and keeping our list together,” he said.
“We haven’t resolved it. We have several of our blokes who we haven’t got finished, we haven’t got contracted, so we will try to do that by next week.”
Balme confirmed the Cats were interested in Fremantle’s Marcus Drum but the Cats’ salary cap problems could stifle any move.
